Women in Media: Are the Simpson's Sexist by Nicole

Are The Simpsons Sexist?
 The longest running animated show The Simpsons is funny, sarcastic, and very yellow, but could it be sexist?

On almost the same week that I got this journal, I saw a Simpsons episode that was about Homers carpentry job. Homer, as usual, does not have the ability to hammer a nail into a piece of wood. Marge on the other hand, as usual, is truly gifted with carpentry skills. The only problem is, if anyone in Springfield finds out that a woman is doing carpentry, they would go ballistic. Because of this Marge would hide in the tool cart and homer would get all of the credit. Now the shady area about this is that The Simpsons make fun of things so they might just be mocking/making fun of sexist people. BUT WAIT! In The Simpsons Movie, when Springfield finds out that Homer’s selfishness causes the dome over Springfield, Lisa is furious and wants to explode but Marge stops her and says “Lisa you’re a woman, you have to hold your anger” Its not just the fact that she said that, but the fact that she seemed serious and nobody in the theater laughed. So are The Simpsons sexist?

This is idiotic. The central male figures of The Simpsons, Bart and Homer, are regularly shown to be inept at nearly everything and often contrasted with the intelligent and skilful women of the show, Marge and Lisa. If anything The Simpsons is sexist against men.

the simpsons makes men look like arses, which is funny. it also reguarly portrays marge as being docile and a bit of a doormat.

Well... Marge Simpson is really sexist. She is most sexist character on the show. She is always trying to make Lisa act like a "proper woman", she became sexist after falling in love and getting married. After she got married, her only purpose is to naturalize patriarchy and be a parody of a sexist woman.

The simpsons does show a lot of sexism that a lot of women do face. But I think it's making a joke, turning "hey this is actual real stuff women face" but making it to where it's able to be funny. Like, make it look so ridiculous people think it's dumb, but then make them realize "that's why sexism is dumb".
There's episodes where Lisa poses as a boy to get into a better school while the girls are left with nothing. There's episodes where Simpson states "let's not be bad to these women because they're someone's sister, mother, daughter" which is sexist in itself because a women's relationship with someone else doesn't define what rights they should have. There's an episode where Marge tries to go into carpentry and gets made fun of because they think a women can't do it, and Homer takes all her credit and he gets it easily because he's a male. I think the Simpsons shows a lot of sexism but it's trying more to show why people shouldn't be sexist then actually promote it.
